Job Description: 

Director of Tourism

The Terrell Chamber of Commerce is seeking a Director of Tourism who will lead the Convention and Visitors Bureau; responsible for management, organizational development, planning and direction of the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). The Tourism Director’s duties require significant leadership, knowledge in tourism and marketing of Terrell.
The Tourism Director reports to the Chamber President/CEO and works closely with other employees.
The Tourism Director must be a personable, accountable, and collaborative professional that is team oriented with the goal of promoting tourism in Terrell. The desired candidate will have the ability and experience in effectively working with people, volunteers, exercising initiative, judgment, tact and diplomacy in a wide variety of public contact situations while conveying ideas clearly and concisely.

Hours/Days of Work: 

8 am - 5 pm Mon-Thurs

8 am - 4 pm Fri

Some nights and weekends.

Responsibilities Include: 
  • Assume responsibility for budgeting and accounting for the tourism promotion fund, which consists of hotel/motel occupancy tax contributions.
  • Attend conferences and training seminars appropriate for the position, representing the city and the chamber in a knowledgeable and professional manner.
  • Assist in research and formulation of all advertising, marketing, and public relations programs, and work cooperatively with other professionals who may be utilized on a contractual basis.
  • Maintain and update media list periodically or coordinate with independent contractor.
  • Assist in managing, writing, communicating press releases to the public, including crisis management.
  • Create, implement, and enforce branding and identity guidelines.
  • Manage media buys (print or electronic advertising).
  • Execute tourism public relations including but not limited to tour coordination, establishing media relations, etc.
  • Responsible for all committee meetings and acts as liaison with other chamber committees and related entities, including but not limited to, CVB events and chamber events.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key City departments involved in the execution of events.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with hotel/motel managers and sales agents in Terrell.
  • Comply with mandated city council reporting schedule regarding the tourism budget and fulfillment of the tourism contract duties.
  • Prepare agenda and facilitate Small Business meetings.  Assist with planning, designing and promoting Small Business events.
  • Manage, maintain and oversee Visitor Center and Visitor Center employees.
  • Coordinate preparation of the Terrell Chamber newsletter.
  • Attend and prepare minutes for Executive and monthly board meetings for the Chamber.
  • Maintain membership in a local service club i.e. Kiwanis, Lions or Rotary Club.
  • Assist at the chamber functions and special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree (BA) from a four-year college or university and/or four (4) years of experience in marketing, tourism, leadership/management, public relations or other closely related fields.  

Special Skills/Abilities/Knoweledge: 

Must have ability to deal with the public, volunteers and fellow employees; strong leadership, self-motivation, and good communication and organizational skills; good knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; business English, spelling and math; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; be a team player; strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point and Publisher; must be detail oriented, creative, credible, multi-tasking, and good work ethics.  Must have Texas driver’s license.

Business attire is required.  Professional to business casual depending on occasion.

Sandals are allowed, no flip-flops.

No low-cut, revealing or see through tops.

No body jewelry visible to the public, except earrings (maximum of 2 per ear).

No visible body tattoos.

Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials (up to 45 lbs).  While working special events may stand and walk for extended periods of time.
